Scotland is known for its stunning landscapes and historic landmarks so it is no surprise that our variety of prestigious locations have been used by the award-winning production teams behind Outlander, The Princess Diaries and A Castle for Christmas - placing Rosebery Venues amongst the top filming locations in Scotland.

Hidden streams amidst tall trees, dramatic heathland, still lochans and rich farmland - Rosebery Estate is a filmmaker's dream, not to mention the diverse range of rooms that the stunning Barnbougle Castle, Rosebery Steading and Rosebery House have to offer.

In this blog, find out why our three first-class venues and the wider Rosebery Estate are perfect for your next film project...

Epic backdrops and towering turrets

If you are setting the scene for a luxurious getaway, the 13th century Barnbougle Castle could be just what you are looking for. Here, a former Prime Minister - Archibald Primrose, the 5th Earl of Rosebery - would contemplate and study while looking out to sea across the Firth of Forth.

The grand banqueting hall was where the Earl would rehearse impactful political speeches and entertain guests. A prestigious and versatile location, the options for creating the perfect shot at Barnbougle are endless. A rich library lined with centuries old books, a four-poster bedroom and private beach are just a smattering of its settings.

Depending on the season, Barnbougle Castle can feel as dramatic and brooding or as warmly abundant as you require.

Capture luxury life in the country

Set the scene in one of the two rustic-luxe barns at Rosebery Steading, which are flooded with natural light by day and lit with state of the art lighting by night. Pan over to the stylish bar or the front of the iconic steeple at this 200-year-old venue, which was restored to its luxurious prime in 2020.

Continue the story in the private grounds or the adjoining cottages, which fuse contemporary style with restored antiques from Rosebery Estate, or of course, create your own!

Accommodation interiors have been designed by esteemed designers REMUS of Edinburgh with room for 28 overnight guests in both the main farmhouse and over five self-catering cottages.

Manor house magic

Rosebery House
is a much-loved retreat for the Primrose family with centuries of rich ancestry. The presence of family life has created an opulent yet welcoming ambience – a rare find in a countryside mansion.

The pristine heritage furnishings, original artworks and a blend of relaxed and formal rooms give ample opportunity for an interesting close up. The home’s light-filled Orangerie is uplifting and reviving, while a secluded private Chapel charms and sparks curiosity.

Tennis courts, a quirky treehouse, manicured lawns and woodlands provide further locations outdoors.

A base for production

Each location has its own private grounds, including Castle Park on the Dalmeny Estate, which provides a large and flat grassy area ideal for setting up a pop-up, remote production unit close to Barnbougle Castle.

All locations are within a handy 30-minute drive to Edinburgh city and the airport, offering unparalled accessibility for your team.

The team at Rosebery Venues are well-rehearsed when it comes to working with film, television, and commercial companies. They are able to offer the insights you will need to crack the logistics of filming across multiple locations that are in easy reach of transport links and hotels.
